Some End of the Year 2007 Thoughts

1. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto should remind voters that this is a dangerous world, and we need a grown-up as president who will not hesitate to use our military to protect our interests and our citizens. This rules out all Democrat candidates.

2. Since it is a given that some liberal in the CIA would leak the so-called interrogation tapes, and the people who saved American lives by conducting the interrogations would then be harassed and worse, destroying the tapes was the right thing to do.

3. Senator Moynihan, who died in 2003, famously said, “each generation adjusts to growth in antisocial behavior by regularly redefining deviancy and, in effect, pretending nothing got worse”. He was described as a great liberal, but considering his concerns with the mounting destruction of our society by liberal ideas, I think he was a great conservative, and I claim him.

4. Ann Coulter sometimes says things that are unacceptable, but I think, watching the performances of Reid, Pelosi, Clinton and Obama, that she was 80% right when she said, “ if Democrats had any brains they would be Republicans”.

5. Any Republican nominated for president will be hated and vilified by the left no matter what his record is, and he will be subjected to an unending campaign of hate speech and invective. It is extremely important, then, that the nominee have the strength, the ability and the inclination to fight back and immediately confront the haters and defend himself. This is one reason to support Thompson, although Giuliani and Romney have also shown these qualities.

6. Under Bush policies we have stopped them in Iraq, we have stopped them in Afghanistan, we have surrounded Iran and possibly slowed their nuclear weapons program, we turned aside North Korea and Libya from pursuing these weapons – all the while maintaining a growing economy and full employment. Pretty good, I’d say.

7. The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget. Thomas Szasz, The Second Sin (1973) "Personal Conduct"

I don't see Thompson going anywhere. He often seems lost without his notes, he has zero fire and passion. He has no "likability" factor. Voters can see this. It's gotta be Guilianni, Romney or Huckabee.

I agree with you Steve. I like Thompson, but he just doesn't seem to be with it. Oddly enough though, Mike Huchabee is very quick and accurate with answers. Whether he'll turn out to be a Republican Jimmy Carter is anyone's guess. Outside of that, I think that you've summed it up very well Russ. I agree with you on most of your points. This world sure is getting more and more dangerous and the Democrats aren't up to the task of protecting the American People. They have proved this over and over again by their actions. They want our American Troops to fight these Islamo Fascists with one hand tied behind their backs, and this type of thinking is just plain ridicules.

One comment mysteriously disappeared. It's evident that your support for the American democracy does not include support for the first amendment.

Wilcox you're a liar. There was no obscenity or vulgarity in my comment. You deleted it because you didn't like its content. As anonymous implied, you have no respect for free speech.

Bud, you should go to another blog if your level of discourse is to call me a liar or a stupid XXX if you disagree with me. I control my blog, and I will delete comments containing obscenities or vulgarities.

If you don't want to be called a liar, don't lie. In response to item 1 above, I said that characterizing all the Democratic candidates as less than grown-up made you look stupid. I did not call you stupid, much less use a triple X obscenity.

Bud, now you are being less than truthful. Move on.

One of the fundamental problems that the Democrats have is that they refuse to acknowledge that we are at war with radical Islam. Democrats choose to believe that we are at war with "terrorists" in some generic sense and ignore that the real problem is radical Islam and their network of extremist mosques, imams, and radical youth indoctrinators. But the left chooses to blind itself with its cultural relativist dogma, asserting that all cultures and religious viewpoints are equally valid. It's this sort of naive approach that leads them to believe that we just need to understand Islam rather than confront the network and infrastructure that propagates the radical Islamist ideology. And its the approach that will lead to failure.

Trying to bring democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan, while difficult and costly, should be lauded by the Left rather than mocked.

Surf Conserve, well said.

Just a quick follow up on Thompson - he was on one of the Sunday morn talk shows and he acknowledged the very lack of fire that I complain of. He acknowledged that politics is not what he's all about...that it's a secondary interest. Do you really want a president who thinks it's a part time job?

On Huckabee - I still like him but sometimes he scares me. His reactions to the Pakistan assination shows he's not always in touch.

Huckabee is a dangerous man - an ignorant person who thinks he knows how you should live your life. Usually these people are on the left. When they are on the right they are doubly dangerous.

I'm sticking with Thompson.
